This painting is part of the artist’s ‘Jealousy Beads.’
These paintings mark the first time that the artist has returned to her first love: Figurative Painting. This series is based on one of the artist’s own poems by the same name. The poem is dark and brooding and acts as a homage to her favorite poet, Edgar Alan Poe. The female figure represents the Priestess of Jealousy. Just as witches often utilize cats or birds to aid them with their magic, monkeys in these paintings represent the priestess’ familiars . These paintings are filled with dark imagery, which represents the crippling disease of jealousy. For example, the scorpions representing the venom or the poisoning of the mind that happens with the affliction of jealousy. See poem listed on the artist’s website: jbberkow.com
