Pair of gilded circular convex mirrors from the Captain’s cabin of HMS Blanch, the Battle of Copenhagen

$9,515.00

An important pair of George 111 gilded circular convex mirrors in original untouched condition formerly belonging to Admiral of the Fleet Sir Graham Eden Hamond, 2nd Baronet and Knight of the Grand Cross.

These mirrors were hung in the Captain’s cabin on board Captains Graham Hamond’s 5th rate HMS Blanche, at the Battle of Copenhagen, 2nd April 1801.Iin the battle, HMS Blanche took the northern part of the line facing the Tre Kronor Battery between HMS Almene and the command ship of the frigate force, HMS Amazon under Capt. Edward Riou. Obscured by the smoke from Nelsons ship HMS Elephant they missed the ‘BLIND EYE’ moment and were the only part of the fleet to obey Sir Hyde Parker’s retreat signal. It is recorded that on the following Sunday captain Hamond held the prayer book for Nelson from which Nelson read the prayers of Thanksgiving to God.

Earlier in his career he served as a junior officer at the Glorious First of June and at various battles throughout the Napoleonic wars. He was promoted Admiral of The Fleet and made a Knight of The Grand Cross
