Roman Mosaic

This Mosaic has a zig zag motif.  The art of Mosaic is ancient, practiced in Egypt, the Orient, Africa and Carthage.  It came to ancient Greece around the 5th century BC.  The decorators of vases could not, with their meager means, reproduce the large polychrome works performed by the great artists of their time, thereby spurning the development of the Mosaic industry.

The technique requires the placement of many small flat variously tinted pieces of stone called “Tesserae” into a mortar ground which is then bound with cement.  A rich and sparkling surface is produced and through illustrative effects light and shades as well as perspective can be suggested.
