The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston ~ Bayou Bend

Upper Philadelphia Hall

Upper Philadelphia Hall is at the very heart of Bayou Bend, connecting the first and second floors as well as the east and west wings.  During the day, this quiet space is filled with both deep shadow and bright glowing light, carried in through the large set of windows that face the north gardens.  The neo-Palladian architectural plan is complemented by traditional 18th- and 19th-century interior moldings, cornices and detailing.  Above the sweeping staircase hangs a 1920s reproduction of an early 19th-century English hall lamp, etched and encircled with ships. The staircase was closely modeled after one Ima Hogg fondly recalled from her time as a young girl living with her family in the Texas Governor’s Mansion when her father James Stephen Hogg served as the state’s first native-born governor.
