This painting titled Singular Reverence marks Sergio’s return to the figure. After a 10-month leave to explore non-figurative abstraction painting, NFTs, and augmented reality technology, this new series of paintings realign with Sergio’s ongoing Cycles of Life series. Singular Reverence depicts the iconographic symbol of the halo or nimbus over the silhouette of a person. This symbol has served as a signifier of spiritual character going back to Hellenistic art and throughout the Middle Ages. However, in this painting, the dark halo provokes questioning of its association with the figure and the overall narrative of the painting. In Sergio’s paintings, ambiguity and specificity simultaneously play an integral part of his work welcoming various views of interpretation.
