MJ Dowling

MJs three decades of art and architecture, combined with a passion for environmental sustainability, are at the core of her abstract coastal paintings. MJ Dowling pursued a Bachelor’s of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh while also taking numerous classes in drawing, painting, and sculpture from their College of Fine Arts. She graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor’s of Architecture degree combined with a Minor in Art. MJs abstract coastal paintings explore the relationship between the built and natural environments. She contrasts the structure of the built environment with the fluidity of natural spaces through the use of color, topography, and patterns, and often the incorporation of text and images to convey historical linkages. By merging these elements through a unique pallet knife technique, her paintings depict a bold new approach to capturing the “spirit” or essence of a place.
